The Story of the Autograph

Gary Thomasson is a former outfielder and first baseman in the major leagues. He played for the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1972 through 1980. He also played in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants in 1981 and 1982 before retiring.

Thomasson is a native of the San Diego area. He was drafted out of high school by the Giants in the seventh round of the 1969 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut just three years later on September 5, 1972. He spend the longest period of his career with the Giants in the majors (six seasons. His best season was his last in San Francisco when he played 145 games with a .256 average, 17 homers, 71 RBU and 16 stolen bases. All of those are career highs (except for the average).

He was traded to the A’s in 1978 and only spent a few months there before being traded to the Yankees. That was pretty lucky for him as the Yankees went on to with the World Series in 1978. Not long after that the Yankees traded him to the Dodgers where he would finish out his major league career.

He was purchased by the Yomiuri Giants and signed to at the time was the biggest contract in the Nippon League. But he never lived up to it unless you count setting a strikeout record as something that meets a big contract. He ended his career with a knee injury.

Gary has a nice signature and he used a nice thin marker that goes with it. Unfortunately it gets a little hidden because of that on some of these cards. I think he has a really great “G” but again the only one it stands out on is the 1977 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Thomasson! I’m giving this return a 6.
