The Story of the Autograph

Gary DiSarcina was a shortstop in the majors from 1989 through 2000 and he spent his entire career with the California Angels who became the Anaheim Angels while he was there. After his playing days he went into coaching, spending time with the Angels and Red Sox before taking bench coach duties with the Mets this year.

DiSarcina grew up in Massachusetts and went to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He was drafted by the Angels in the sixth round in 1988 and would make his debut at the end of the 1989 season on September 23rd. He was back and forth in the minors through 1991 and finally supplanted Dick Schofield as the starting shortstop in 1992. He stayed as the starter through the 1998 season.

His best year was unfortunately the strike shortened season of 1995. He batted .307 in 99 games and hit five homers with 44 RBI. He earned his one and only All-Star appearance that year and got a few MVP votes to finish in the top 20 in the voting. He had some injuries toward the end of his career including a broken arm in 1999. He attempted a comeback in 2002 in the Red Sox organization but never made it back to the bigs.

Gary has a crazy signature. What I find interesting about both of these is that the 1993 Leaf card is such a different size to the 1993 Upper Deck card. Obviously the Upper Deck card has a brighter background so you can see it better so even though it’s smaller, I like that one better. Something to note is that I did sent Gary three cards and he only signed and sent two back.

Thanks Mr. DiSarcina! This return gets a 6.
