The Story of the Autograph

Fred Lewis is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 2006 to 2012 with the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets. In 2013 he went to Japan and played for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp.

Lewis is a native of Mississippi. He played basketball and football as well as baseball when he was growing up. After high school he attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College where he continued with both baseball and football. He was first drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 20th round of the 2001 MLB Draft but he didn’t sign. Instead he went on to Southern University and continued playing baseball. In 2002 he was drafted in the second round of the MLB Draft by the Giants and signed with them.

He spent several years in the minors and made his major league debut on September 1, 2006. He only played in 13 games for the rest of that year but in 11 at-bats he hit .455. The next season he got some more significant time and played in 58 games and was pretty much in the lineup the next two years. 2008 was not only his best year as a Giant but his best year in the majors as he hit .282 with nine homers, 40 RBI, seven steals, and eleven triples, all career highs.

After the Giants he moved around to Toronto, Cincinnati, Cleveland (but never played in the majors with them), and New York. He just never stuck anywhere and then moved on to play in Japan and then for some independent minor league teams.

Fred definitely fills a little bit of a hole in my TTM collection. I don’t tend to have a tremendous amount of autographs from this era. 2011 Topps is probably a set that I have the most autographs of for modern cards but this was a time when I still getting back into things so I feel like I don’t have as many. I like Fred’s signature and I like the blue on the Blue Jays card but I don’t think these stick out as well and I need to find some better cards for him to sign. Hopefully cards of him as a Giant because that’s how I think of him.

Thanks Mr. Lewis! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
