The Story of the Autograph

Frank Reich is a former quarterback and current head coach in the NFL. He played from 1985 through 1998 with the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and Detroit Lions. He’s coached the Indianapolis Colts since 2018.

Reich was born in New York but grew up in Pennsylvania where he played baseball, football and basketball in high school. He went on to play for the University of Maryland and backed up Boomer Esiason for three years. He famously led the Terps to an amazing comeback win against the Miami Hurricanes after being down 31-0 at the half.

The Buffalo Bills drafted him in the third round of the 1985 NFL Draft with the 57th overall pick. Unfortunately for Reich, Jim Kelly came over from the USFL in 1986 and he backed up Kelly for years. But the Bills were so successful while Reich and Kelly were quarterbacks there and Reich always played well when called upon to replace Kelly while he was injured. He led another famous comeback when the Bills came back to beat the Houston Oilers after being down 35-3 early in the third quarter.

He moved on to the expansion Panthers in 1995, started their first game and threw the first touchdown pass in Panthers history to another former Bill, Pete Metzelaars. He was replaced by rookie Kerry Collins a few weeks later though. After than he spent time with the Jets and Lions, all mostly as a backup.

Reich has been in coaching since 2006 where he started as an intern with the Colts and after a few stops in other places, he’s now their head coach.

Frank has a great signature and it really came out well on these cards. His “F” is making me realize that can be another great letter in a signature. I really love when it comes out looking backwards in cursive. It’s a nice and big signature but also, and this is pretty great for football cards, they weren’t too busy to show it off.

Thanks Mr. Reich! I’m giving this return an 8.
