The Story of the Autograph

Fergie Jenkins is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. The Hall of Famer played from 1965 to 1983 with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs (twice), Texas Rangers (twice), and Boston Red Sox.

Jenkins is a native of Ontario, Canada. He was a very talented athlete growing up. He competed in track and field, hockey, and basketball. He grew up playing first base but eventually was pushed into pitching by a former minor league and scout. The Phillies signed him as an amateur free agent in 1962. He debuted for them three years later on September 10, 1965, starting out in a relief role. He was traded to the Cubs the following year.

After finishing out 1966 with the Cubs, it was 1967 that he broke out. He went on a run of six straight 20-win seasons for the Cubs, and seven of the next eight if you skip past a slightly down year in 1973. That included league leading 24 games in 1971 and another league leading 25 in 1974 (after moving to the Rangers). He led the league in complete games four times with a career high 30 and 325 innings pitched in 1971. During those years he earned his three All-Star nods and the Cy Young in 1971.

After the 1973 season he was traded to the Rangers for Vic Harris and Bill Madlock. He had that one more great season in 1974, but never won more than 18 games after that, but still put up some winning seasons for most of that last part of his career. He was traded a couple more times in the end of his career: to the Red Sox in 1975 and back to the Rangers in 1977. He closed his career out with the Cubs after signing with them as a free agent in 1981 and then was released in Spring Training of 1984.

After his major league playing days he kept active in the minors in Canada. He later ran for office. In 1987 he was elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and then later, in 1991, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Score on Fergie Jenkins – 6.5

Fergie has a pretty fancy signature. I think the hard part on these are they aren’t the best cards to show it off. I love those Super Veteran cards from 1983 with the current and older pictures of players and I have a few of them singed. I think the 1981 Topps card is just one that I always remember because it’s one of the first sets I remember collecting. I’ll have to try to find some other Fergie cards to get signed, but I think he has upped the amount he asks to sign for so I will need to check that before sending.

Thanks Mr. Jenkins! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
