The Story of the Autograph

Eric Anthony is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1989 to 1997 with the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Anthony was born in San Diego, California but grew up in Houston, Texas. The Astros drafted him in the 34th round of the 1986 MLB Draft out of high school (technically he had dropped out). This was after he had talked his way into a tryout for scouts where he showed some power. He made his major league debut for them just three years later on July 28, 1989 after continuing to show power with some big home runs in the minors. He did however also show his ability to strike out, not unlike the all-or-nothing players today.

He wouldn’t play in a full season in the majors until 1992. Up to that point in the chances he had he never hit over .192. In 1992, in 137 games he hit .239 with a career high 19 home runs and 80 RBI. That would probably be his zenith as a player though. Houston traded him to the Mariners in December of 1993 for Mike Felder and Mike Hampton.

From there he moved around a lot as a free agent. Sometimes he was able to make it to the big league club, like in Cincinnati, Colorado, and Los Angeles. But he didn’t make it there in Minnesota or Texas. After his time in the majors he gave the Japanese League a shot in 1998 with the Yakult Swallows. He came back to the U.S. and tried to make the majors again with the Dodgers, some of that due to injury. He played in the Independent minor leagues and In the Mexican League before officially retiring.

This was a surprise for me. I think I saw Eric signing and I figured I would just give him a shot. The best one of these, the 1994 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice card is the best by far. On the others it appears that the marker couldn’t really keep up. But I love his huge “E” in the signature.

Thanks Mr. Anthony! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
