The Story of the Autograph

Ed Wojna is a former right handed pitcher in the major leagues. He both started and worked as a reliever during four seasons from 1985 to 1989 with the San Diego Padres and Cleveland Indians.

Wojna was born and raised in Connecticut. He went on to Indian River State College in Florida where he was drafted twice before signing. The first time was by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth round of the 1980 MLB Draft. But he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies after they drafted him in the June-Secondary Phase of the draft in the same year, that was in the fifth round.

He wouldn’t make his debut witht he Phillies though. In 1983 he went to San Diego with Darren Burroughs, Marty Decker and Lance McCullers for Sixto Lezcano. He would make his major league debut with the Padres two years later on June 16, 1985. He made 15 appearances that year which would be a career high. He mostly spent time between the major league team and the minors for his career.

In 1988 he didn’t appear in the majors. The Padres traded him to the White Sox after the 1987 season and he spent that year in their minor league system. The following year the White Sox traded him to Cleveland and he was again up and down before being released by the Indians after the 1989 season.

You pronouce his name like “Wo-hee-na.”

These are great from Ed. Another example of a guy who didn’t have much of a career, but he sure has a great signature. He pretty much signs in one word, or it least it appears that way. I really like the circle for the dot on top of his “j”. I think my favorite of these is the 1987 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Wojna! I’m giving this return an 8.
