The Story of the Autograph

Ed Kranepool is a former first baseman in the major leagues. He played his entire 18 year career with the New York Mets from their inaugural season in 1962 though the 1979 season.

Kranepool was born and raised in New York City. He played baseball and basketball in high school and was signed by the Mets at age 17 as an amateur free agent. He made his major league debut the same year on September 22, 1962. But what an appearance it was. How many people can say they replaced Gil Hodges at first base in a game? He only made it into three game before the end of the season but he would appear in just over half the team’s games in 1963.

The first base job wasn’t his completely for a few more years though. He had some competition at first on top of being so young and would play the outfield as well, along with Duke Snider, during those early years. In 1965 Kranepool made his first and only All-Star game, but unfortunately he didn’t make it into the game.

Of course he is best known for being part of the 1969 Miracle Mets that won the World Series. But the next season was tough and Kranepool didn’t hit very well. He was demoted to the minors, and while he thought about retiring he accepted the assignment. He was better for hit as after that year his average, OBP, SLG, and OPS all was higher for the remainder of his career.

More recently Kranepool had been waiting for a kidney donation and this past spring he finally went through a successful transplant. Every once in a while you can find him at City Field including this year for the celebration of the 1969 Mets.

The Score on Ed Kranepool – 6.5

Ed’s always had a really nice signature. I’ve always love the way he writes his “E”. It just always seems to have a lot of flair. He always signs pretty neatly so his signature is distinct. I’ve had a couple successes from him in the past and they’ve all come out well.

Thanks Mr. Kranepool! I’m giving this return a 6.5.

There was a point where it really seemed that he was going to die from that kidney problem. So happy that he was able to get the transplant and seems to be doing well. Wishing him many healthy and happy years….

I know it was great to see him out at Citi Field this year with all the festivities they had. Glad he’s doing well.
