The Story of the Autograph
Dwight Bernard is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played during four seasons from 1978 to 1982 with the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers.
Bernard is a native of Illinois. He went on to Belmont University. While there he was name District Player of the Year in 1974 and he currently ranks second in ERA in school history at 2.18. He was drafted by the Mets in the second round of the 1974 MLB Draft. He started out as a starter in the minors and struggled some. He was moved to a relief role and earned a call up to the majors.
He debuted with the Mets on June 29, 1978. He pitched in 30 and 32 games in 1978 and 1979 respectively, with one start in each season. Overall in those years he went 1-7 with a 4.50 ERA in 92 innings pitched. The Mets traded him to the Brewers in 1979 for Mark Bomback.
Bernard spent the rest of the 1979 and the 1980 season in Milwaukee’s minor league system. He earn six appearances in the 1981 season. Then in his final major league season he went 3-1 with a 3.76 ERA in 47 relief appearances and 79 innings. He appeared in one game of the 1982 AL CS and one game in the World Series that same year. Despite being better than he had been in his career, he was released and never pitched in the majors again.
Bernard went on to coaching and worked as a pitching coach for several minor league teams. As recently as 2019 he was working in that capacity for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

1983 Topps is not always the easiest card for guys to sign. This one is pretty good though and Dwight seemed to put his signature in a good place to see it. He verges on signing his head in the corner. I have no problem with that but it seems that some people try to avoid that type of thing.
