The Story of the Autograph

Duffy Dyer is a former catcher who played from 1968 through 1981. He played more than half of his career (the first half) in New York with the Mets. The second half of his career was spent with the Pirates, Expos and Tigers.

Dyer’s full name is Donald Robert Dyer and he’s born in Dayton, OH. He grew up in Arizona and was a three-sport athlete who went on to attend Arizona State. He played with Sal Bando and Rick Monday while with the Sun Devils and they won the 1965 College World Series. The Mets would draft Dyer in 1966 and he would make his first appearance with the team on September 21, 1968.

1969 was a big year for the Mets and Dyer was part of it. He was Jerry Grote’s backup as they won the World Series in October of that year. He would stay in a back-up role until 1972 when he played in 94 games (a career high he matched in 1977 with Pittsburgh). That was probably the best year of his career as he got over 350 plate appearances and hit .231 with eight homers and 36 RBI (career highs except for the average).

Duffy has a solid autograph and I hope I can find a card of him as a Met. But I do love that Pirates uniform in the 1978 Topps card. I actually Met Duffy in 1990 when my Dad went to Ulti-Met week and I have is autograph from that too.

Thanks Mr. Dyer! I’m giving this a 6.
