The Story of the Autograph

Doug West is a former guard in the NBA. He played from 1989 to 2001 with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Vancouver Grizzlies.

West is a native of Pennsylvania. After being a Parade All-American in high school he went to play for Rollie Massimino at Villanova. He had an excellent college career, earning second and third team Big East honors in 1988 and 1989. As a junior he led the team on a great NCAA run in 1988 with a few upsets including No. 3 Illinois and No. 2 Kentucky before losing to the eventual champions Oklahoma.

The Minnesota Timberwolves chose him with their second round pick in 1989. He was a regular starter in his thir season in Minnesota. From 1991 to 1995 he averaged double figures in scoring, having as high as a 19.3 point per game average in 1992-1993.

Injuries started taking their toll and the Timberwolves moved him to the Grizzlies for Anthony Peeler. But he still saw limited time, closing out his career in Vancouver. In more recent years he’s coach high school in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He also assisted at Duquesne and then for his alma mater. Then he went to the D-League.

This is another of those basketball returns where the cards have such busy images that it doesn’t show off the signature very well. Doug puts a good amount of ink on the cards, but a couple of these looks like the marker was a little light on ink or that he just signs really fast. I think my favorite of these is the 1994 Upper Deck card.

Thanks Mr. West! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
