The Story of the Autograph

Doug Corbett is a former right-handed relief pitcher. He played in the major leagues from 1980 to 1987 for the Minnesota Twins, California Angels, and Baltimore Orioles.

Corbett was born and raised in Sarasota, Florida. He went on to attend the University of Florida and play baseball for the Gators. They inducted him into their Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great” in 1995. He was signed an an amateur free agent by the Kansas City Royals in 1974. He was cut a year later and signed by the Reds. Still not having appeared in the majors, the Twins picked him up in the 1979 Rule 5 Draft.

He made his major league debut the next year for them on April 10, 1980. He worked as a closer and had an 8-6 record with 23 saves and a 1.98 ERA. That was a good enough line to earn him enough votes to finished third in the 1980 Rookie of the Year competition. The next year he went 2-5 with a 2.57 ERA and 17 saves (he led the league in Games and the majors in Games Finished). He also earned his one and only All-Star nod in 1981. This was after being traded to the Angels that involved among others, Tom Brunansky.

Corbett spent the majority of his career with the Angels (from 1982 though 1986. That brought him his only playoff appearance in 1986 against the Red Sox. He pitched in three games that series going 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 6.2 innings pitched. He finished his career the next year in 1987 after signing with the Baltimore Orioles.

This return from Doug came during a period where I seemed to get a lot back that had been out for a while. I like the way Doug’s “C” looks like is just put right on top of everything right in the middle of his signature. It’s actually connected to the end of his “g” which is definitely a cool touch.

Thanks Mr. Corbin! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
