The Story of the Autograph
Doug Bird pitched in the majors from 1973 through 1983. Over his 11-year career he played for the Royals (1973-1978), Phillies (1979), Yankees (1980-1981), Cubs (1981-1982) and Red Sox (1983).
Bird was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 1969 amateur draft in the third round. He was used in a lot of different ways over the years. He was both a reliever and a starter at different time of his career. Many times he played both those roles in the same year. He had four different years wit double digits starts: 82 (33), 76 (27), 81 (16), and 81 (12). His best years with more starts were 1976 when he started 27 of the 39 games he pitched in and had a 12-10 record and then in 1981 wen he split time in New York and Chicago wit a 8-6 record while starting 16 of the 29 games he pitched in.
His best year might have been 1977. He pitched in 53 games wit five starts and had an 11-4 record. He posted a 3.88 ERA in those games and pitched 118.1 innings. He also collected 14 saves. That wasn’t his highest save total though. As a rookie in 1973 he had 20 saves. But 1977 was the heart of when Bird was making it to the postseason with the Royals as well.
He appeared in the postseason wit the Royals during the end of his time there and it was always against the Yankees. He pitched well in the 1976 and 1977 postseasons. But in 1978 he gave up a two-run homer to Thurman Munson in the 8th inning of game three and had a 9.00 ERA for those games.

Doug has a solid signature and the best part about it is that it’s big. It comes across like he might be one of those guys that doesn’t put his hand down when he signs. While that definitely helps for no smudges, it means for a sometimes whacky signature. This is nice and big and he used a great marker. Plus I like the blue and how it comes out with these cards. My favorite card of these is the ’78, but I think that one is the lesser of these three for this return because it’s a little dark and busy.
