The Story of the Autograph

Dick Schofield is a former shortstop in the major leagues and this year was coaching in the minors with the Louisville Bats. He played from 1983 through 1996 primarily with the California Angels, but also spent time with the Mets, Blue Jays, and Dodgers.

Schofield, son of former major league Dick “Ducky” Schofield,  was drafted in the first round of the 1981 MLB Draft with the third overall pick straight out of high school in Illinois. He made his major league debut two years later as a September call-up in 1983.

He was known more for his defense than his offense. He only hit double digit home runs once with a career high of 13 and never topped more than 57 RBI in a season. His highest battering average in any season in which he appear in a significant amount of games was .255 with a career average of .230. Schofield also shares a record of having four seasons with 400 at bats and less than 100 hits.

After his time with the Angels ended in 1992, Schofield bounced around and did find himself as part of the 1993 World Championship Blue Jays team. However, he spent much of that season out with a broken arm and didn’t play in the postseason.

Schofield was one of the first signings I got when I started TTM a while ago. I always thought of him as a reliable signer. However I did send to him before this return and I didn’t get it back. I’m thinking he might have been in between coaching jobs. These came out really well though. That’s a damn strong marker he used which I love and it really sticks out on the darker, busier cards.

Thanks Mr. Schofield! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
