The Story of the Autograph

Dick Green played in the major leagues from 1963 through 1974. He spent his entire career as a second baseman with the Athletics and he was part of the team as it moved from Kansas City to Oakland. Dick was lucky enough to play ball, but even luckier to close out his career on a team that would win three consecutive World Series Championships from 1972-1974.

Dick was born in Iowa and then grew up in South Dakota. In high school he was a great quarterback and was offered a scholarship by Michigan State. Instead of going to college he signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1960 as a free agent. He was called up in September of 1963.

Green hit .240 for is career with 80 total homers and 422 RBI. His highest home run total was 15 in his second full year of playing. His highest RBI total was 64 in 1969. As for average is career high was a .286 average in 1972. He was a solid player in the field and an OK hitter for a second baseman back then. Not like a Robinson Cano, Daniel Murphy or Chase Utley today.

Green won the Babe Ruth award in 1974 for is performance in the playoffs. He didn’t get a single hit in the Series that year, but he was great in the field and tied a World Series record by starting three double plays in one game. Overall he participated in six double plays in that Series. The A’s released him in 1975 and he decided to retire and run the family business.

The Score on Dick Green – 8.0

Dick has a classic signature and like a lot of the guys I have sent to recently, his is really clean. He uses a great marker and the only thing I would ask for is for it to be bigger. I like cards signed, but as always the cards with the facsimile signature are my least favorite and that ’75 Topps fits the bill. But overall these look great and I’m glad these classic cards came out so well.

Thanks Mr. Green! I’m giving this return an 8.
