The Story of the Autograph

Derrick McKey is a former forward in the National Basketball Association. He played from 1987 to 2002 with the Seattle SuperSonics, Indiana Pacers, and Philadelphia 76ers.

McKey is from Meridian, Mississippi. He played of course played basketball in high school but was also a shortstop when he played baseball. He went on to the University of Alabama and helped them earn a two seed in the NCAA tournamant. He was also the SEC Player of the Year in 1987 and decided to leave the Crimson Tide after his junior year. The SuperSonics then drafted him in the first round of the 1987 NBA Draft with the ninth overall pick.

In Seattle he became part of what was known as the “Big Mac” team that also included Nate McMillan and Xavier McDaniel. He was chosen for the All-Rookie First Team in 1988. After six solid seasons in Seattle he would be traded to the Pacers along with Gerald Paddio and Detlef Schrempf.

His scoring went down in Indiana but he was known for his defensive skills and versatility. He could guard just about anyone on the court. He was chosen as an NBA All-Defensive Second Team member twice in 1995 and 1996. The Pacers were consistent playoff contenders but seemed to always disappoint. Eventually they broke through and made the NBA Finals in 2000 but lost to the Lakers. McKey went to the Sixers for the final season of his career.

Derrick’s signature has an interesting combination of letters and lines. You can see he sort of focuses on a few letters, such as the “D” in his first name and then its really just lines for the rest of it. He stacked his signature on the Sonics cards but not on the Pacers version. I think that one is my favorite because you can see it well, but I really think of him as a Pacer.

Thanks Mr. McKey! I’m giving this return a 6.
