The Story of the Autograph

Denny Walling played in the major leagues for eighteen seasons, from 1975 to 1993. During his career he played with the Athletics, Astros (twice), Cardinals, and Rangers and played at either third base, first base, or an outfield position. He spent the vast majority of is career in Houston (1977 – 1988) and that’s how I remember him best.

Walling grew up in New Jersey and played baseball in college at Clemson. The Cardinals originally drafted him in the eight round of the 1974 MLB Draft, but he chose to stay at Clemson. The following year he was drafted by the Oakland A’s. He made it to the majors just three months after being drafted and made is debut on September, 7, 1975. He would be up and down the next couple years and then traded to the Astros.

After hitting .348 in 29 games at AAA Charleston the Astros brought him up for good. Over the years he would become known as a great pinch hitter with the Astros. He earned the nickname “Good Wood” as he was a valuable bat off the bench (at least I hope that’s the reason). He’s still among the career leaders with 108 pinch hits.

After playing Denny went into coaching. He’s spent time in the majors with the Athletics, Mets, and for a while he’s been in the Orioles organization in the minor leagues.

Denny really has a classic autograph. I don’t think I’ve ever really seen a bad version of it. These are great signatures, but I gotta find some better cards for him to sign. The ’89 Topps cards takes the auto well because you can see it, but the others have some dark backgrounds and uniforms that get in the way a little. I rather have better Astros cards since that’s where I remember him playing.

One of the funny things about this return is that I got it on the same day as Terry Leach. The funny thing is when I was looking back at my records, I’ve gotten them back on the same day before years ago. Looking deeper, I even sent those on the same day, just like these. Deja Vu!

Thanks Mr. Walling! I’m giving these a 6.5.
