The Story of the Autograph

Delino DeShields, Jr. plays in the outfield for the Texas Rangers. He’s the oldest child of Delino DeShields, Sr. who played for, among others, the Expos and Dodgers during his time in the baseball.

Delino was born in Maryland but grew up in the Atlanta area and played baseball and football in high school. He was recruited by Georgia and Ole Miss to play football but decided to play baseball instead. LSU only committed to half a scholarship because they new he wanted to play professionally. In 2010 the Astros selected him with the 8th overall pick in the draft.

He played in the minors with the Astros through 2014. At the end of his time in their system he was hit in the face by a fastball. To put it simply, it broke his face (you should do a Google image search – yikes!). At the Winter Meetings later that year, the Rangers selected him in the Rule 5 Draft. He made the Opening Day roster in 2015 and was the Rookie of the Month in the AL for May that year. In 2016 he started the year in center but was demoted for inconsistent play and replaced by Ian Desmond. He came back the next year to hit a walk-off RBI single in the 13th to beat the Royals.

This year DeShields had a broken hand after being hit by a pitch and was out for several weeks.

The Score on Delino DeShields Jr – 4.5

Delino has a bit of a messy signature. It’s kind of one of those that you can really make out as his. On top of that he signed what might be the busiest part of the card. I always think that these 2016 Topps cards are designed to be signed toward the bottom, just above the name. I may try sending other cards in the future to see if I can improve on this one.

Thanks Mr. DeShields! I’m giving this one a 4.5.
