The Story of the Autograph
David Klingler is a former quarterback in the NFL. He played from 1992 through 1997 for the Bengals and Raiders.
Klingler was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He stayed home for college and went to the University of Houston. As a Cougar he was amazing. He played from 1988 through 1991 and set a bunch of records. He three 11 touchdowns in a game and set the record for most yards gained in a separate game with 716 yards (later broken). In all he threw for 9,430 yards and 91 touchdowns, 54 of those coming in the 1990 season (later broken by Colt Brennan, but he played in three more games). He had a shot to be the Heisman trophy winner but finished behind Ty Detmer and Raghib Ismail.
The Bengals took him in the first round of the 1992 NFL Draft. He earned the starting job in 1993 but would eventually lose it to Jeff Blake in 1994. After not making it with the Bengals he moved on to the Raiders to be a back up for the 1996 and 1997 seasons. He would try to make it with the Packers in 1998 but didn’t make the roster.
Klingler had an amazing arm, but shoulder trouble early in his career pretty much ruined him. He had surgery after his third season and it shuold have been a career ending injury at that time but he somehow stuck around.

I love the style on David’s signature. It all starts with that little swish-like thing at the bottom of his “D”. Then his last name gets a little bit loopy. I really love the weight of the marker he used in general. However, on these busy football cards sometimes it just gets buried in everything else going on with the card.

I went to high school with David and his brother Jimmy. He had no chance with those awful Bengals teams, darn shame. He was a lot of fun to watch in college. I heard he went back to school to become a minister. I can’t believe I’ve never sent to him. I’ll remedy that soon!
Those teams were some kind of terrible weren’t they? But I can remember Houston being nuts with him.
