The Story of the Autograph

Dave Schmidt is a former right-handed pitcher who worked mostly as a reliever in the big leagues. He played from 1981 through 1992 with the Rangers, White Sox, Orioles, Expos and Mariners.

Schmidt was born in Michigan but raised in California. He went to UCLA and was drafted by the Rangers in the 26th round of the 1979 MLB Draft. Just to year later he would make his major league debut on May 1, 1981. He made 14 appearances that year with only one start. He was 0-1 with a 3.13 ERA and one save.

He spent the biggest chunk of his career with the Rangers (1981-1985). He was a pretty good reliever for them over the years with an ERA just over three (3.14). After a stop in Chicago, Schmidt went to the Orioles for three seasons. The Orioles gave him more chances to start during that time (49 starts out of 114 games) and he put up a 28-3 record with a 4.39 ERA.

After Baltimore he moved on to Montreal and the Mariners before ending his career. He went on to work as a pitching coordinator in the Orioles system.

The Score on Dave Schmidt – 7.0

Dave has a really nice signature. I love the way the “D” and the “S” both have the same little swoop on it to get into the next letter. It’s really a classically styled signature with that angle he has to all the letters. Plus these cards to a pretty good job to show it off.

Thanks Mr. Schmidt! I’m giving this return a 7.
