The Story of the Autograph
Dave Roberts is a former major league who played at mostly third base and catcher during his time in the league. He played from 1972 to 1982 with the San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies.
Roberts is a native of Oregon. He would attend the University of Oregon and play baseball for the Ducks. After his junior year the Padres chose him with the first overall pick of the 1972 MLB Draft. He made the day after he was drafted on June 7, 1972. Not only did he get in his first game but he would also get into 100 more in that first season. He started off his career with a .244 average, five homers, and 33 RBI.
He was a part of the Padres infield until 1975 when his playing time decreased to 33 games. Although maybe it wasn’t all bad as he spent most of that season and the next playing for the Padres minor league squad in Hawaii. While there they tried to convert him to catcher. They sold his contract to the Blue Jays in 1977, but reacquired him when their roster was a bit thin.
He moved around a bit for the last years of his career and after retiring he managed in the minors. The Emerald Emeralds didn’t put up a good record and it was is one and only shot at managing. But he did coach first base for the Indians in 1987.

Dave has a bit of a messy signature. But it also doesn’t help that he kind of messed one of them up. That 1976 card seems to be smudged or maybe just had a marker issue. It was also the only one that he put a bible verse on. I know I’ve brought it up before but it always confuses me as to how some guys choose to just do that to one card.
