The Story of the Autograph

Dave McKay is a former infielder in the major leagues. He played from 1975 to 1982 with the Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, and Oakland Athletics.

McKay is Canadian and a native of Vancouver, British Columbia. He attended Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington and then Creighton University in Nebraska. The Twins signed him as a amateur free agent in June of 1971 and he would make his major league debut for them on August 22, 1975. It was a great debut as he hit a home run in his first at-bat.

He moved on to the Blue Jays after being left unprotected by the Twins for the 1976 MLB Expansion Draft. He was their starting third baseman for their first game and had two hits in the victory. He moved on to start at second base in 1978, but then struggled in 1979 and was sent to the Minors.

He signed with the Athletics in 1980 and closed out his career as a utility infielder. He helped them reach the ALDS in 1981 and had a solo homer and .273 average to help beat the Royals. He struggled in 1982 and was back down to the minors and in 1983 retired and immediately went into coaching in the minors the following season.

Since then he’s coach for 36 consecutive years. He’s worked for the A’s, Cardinals, Cubs and currently the Diamondbacks. He’s been part of three World Series winning teams as a coach (1989, 2006, 2011).

McKay was voted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.

I didn’t really know if this one was going to come back so I was happy when it did. That’s especially true with all the uncertainty around the season this year. So really anything that was coming back was a surprise. Dave did a great job on these cards. I love his “D” (awkward…) and I always find it interesting how people do their “Mc”. It looks like Dave’s is actually “M.”.

Thanks Mr. McKay! I’m giving this return a 7.
