The Story of the Autograph
Daryl “Moose” Johnston played at the fullback position in the NFL for eleven years. He spent the entirety of his career with the Dallas Cowboys and was part of three Super Bowl championship teams. The Cowboys in those days were a bit of a dynasty for the 90’s.
Johnston grew up in upstate New York and would attend college at Syracuse University. After redshirting as a freshman he would play special teams and earned the starting fullback position in 1986. In 1988 he was All-Big East and an All-American. He graduated and was selected by the Cowboys with the 39th overall pick in the second round of the 1989 Draft.
The Cowboys is where he got the nickname moose. It happened in his rookie year. Backup quarterback Babe Laufenberg game him the name because of how he looked compared to the other running backs (6’2″ and 240+ lbs.). The name would stick and the fans would use it when he made big plays.
Daryl is considered one of the best fullbacks to play the game. I think it helps to block for one of the greatest running backs to play the game too so when Emmitt Smith is with you in the back field that doesn’t hurt. He would be more of a pass catcher than a runner and had more receptions in his career than carries. He was good enough to make the Pro Bowl twice in 1993 and 1994. Johnston retired after the 1999 season because of a neck injury. Smith knew how important Moose was to his success and when he set the rushing record and they were together for a hug that day and Emmitt thanked him during his Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
These days Johnston can be found in the booth with Fox Sports where he’s worked with Kenny Albert since 2013. I actually like Moose on the broadcasts, and probably more now that Tony Siragusa is no longer on that broadcast team.
The Score on Daryl Johnston – 8.5
I might have given this a higher score if the card would have taken the autograph a bit better. It a little dark and busy where he signed, but Daryl has a nice signature. The size of the “J” and the way it let’s him fit “Moose” inside the loop is cool. I always like when players include their nickname with their signature and that usually helps get a higher score out of me.
Thanks Mr. Johnston! I’m giving this one an 8.5.
