The Story of the Autograph
Dan Majerle is a former professional basketball player known during his playing days as “Thunder Dan.” He played as a shooting guard and small forward during his 14 year career in the NBA. He played with the Phoenix Suns (twice), Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat.
Majerle was born and raised in Traverse City, Michigan and attended college at Central Michigan University. He was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 1988 with the 14th overall pick in the draft. The Suns were famously booed for the pick and coach Cotton Fitzsimmons said, “you’ll be sorry you ever booed this young man.” And it showed that first year as Majerle, who appeared in 54 games, helped the team make the playoffs and advance to the Western Conference Finals and lose to the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.
He would go on to be a three-time All-Star (all as a Sun), two-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team, be in the Suns Ring of Honor and have his number retired by the franchise. His time with the Suns even included a trip to the Finals with Charles Barkley leading the team and Majerle as the primary shooting guard. The would eventually lose to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls for their third consecutive championship.
Majerle has been coaching since 2008 when he was the associate head coach for the Suns. In 2013 he became the head coach of Grand Canyon University in their first season as a Division I team.
The Score on Dan Majerle – 5.5
I really like Dan’s signature, but I am quickly learning that most basketball cards are not great for autographs. The are just two dark in general. Yes, the Skybox cards are just plain black, but the crowd backgrounds are so busy and really dark. I actually hadn’t thought of how dark the stands are from the court.
Thanks Mr. Majerle! I’m giving this return a 5.5 overall.
