The Story of the Autograph

Chuck Rainey is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He was mostly used as a starting pitcher with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, then as a relief pitcher with the Oakland Athletics. He played from 1979 through 1984.

Rainey was born and raised in around San Diego, California. The Red Sox drafted him out of high school with the 19th overall pick in the 1974 MLB Draft. He didn’t make his major league debut until five years later on September 9, 1979. He played with the Red Sox until 1982 when he was traded to the Cubs for Doug Bird.

He spent a season and a half with the Cubs until they traded him to the Athletics midway through the 1984 season for Davey Lopes. It’s interesting that his final major league appearance was on September 9, 1984, the anniversary of his first major league appearance.

Rainey’s best season was with the Cubs in 1983. He had a career high in Games and Games Started with 34 in both of those categories. He posted a 14-13 record with a 4.48 ERA.

The Score on Chuck Rainey – 6.5

The way Chuck writes his first name is a little funny. It’s almost a bunch of slashes. But my favorite part is actually his last name. I usually like it better when there’s a little more detail to it. But I really like it that it simply comes out as, “R”.

Thanks Mr. Rainey! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
