The Story of the Autograph

Dale Murphy is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1976 to 1993 primarily with the Atlanta Braves and then in his later career with the Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies.

Murphy is a native of Portland, Oregon. He was drafted with the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 1974 MLB Draft by the Braves. He started out as a catcher and playing some first base. After two years in the minors he made his major league debut on September 13, 1976. He played less than 20 games in each of the first two seasons he played in, then in 1978 he bust onto the scene.

Dale was good right from the get go, but he really was recognized in 1980 when he started in the outfield and earned his first of what would be seven trips to the All-Star Game. Plus he earned his first MVP votes that year. That was his first year of 30+ homers, plus he added a .281 average and 89 RBI. He would go on to have six more All-Star nods in consecutive seasons from 1982 to 1987.

He was great in those years. Aside from the All-Star games, he was named the MVP two years in a row in 1982 and 1983. He also won five Gold Gloves and four Silver Sluggers. His best year was probably 1983 when he played in all 162 games, hit .302 (a career high for a full season), hit 36 home runs and drove in a league leading and career high 121 RBI. This was his second season of having more than 30 homers and he would go on to hit a career high 44 in 1987.

His production began to go down in the late 80s and the Braves decided to trade him to Philadelphia in 1990. He was definitely not the same player and was dealing with arthritis in his knee. The Phillies would release him in 1993 during Spring Training and he signed with the Rockies in their first season, where he would mostly pinch hit. He announced his retirement in the middle of that season at age 37.

These are great from Dale. If I try him again I need to find cards of him during the heart of his career in Atlanta when he was putting up his amazing stats. I think in this return I was mostly trying to get him in the few uniforms he wore and as part of some sets where I have a lot of cards and I’m trying to fill out the team pages for.

Thanks Mr. Murphy! I’m giving this return a 7.
