The Story of the Autograph
Craig Counsell is a former major league infielder and currently the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers. During his playing days, from 1995 through 2011, he played with the Rockies, Marlins, Dodgers, Diamondbacks (twice), and Brewers (twice). He’s a two-time World Series winner and NLCS MVP and was on base the last two times the World Series was won with a walk-off hit.
Counsell was born in South Bend, IN but grew up in Wisconsin. His Dad actually worked for the Brewers back then. He would eventually return to South Bend to attend Notre Dame and play baseball. The Rockies drafted Counsell in the 11th round of the 1992 MLB Draft. He debuted with the Rockies in 1995 but only play three games and be back in the minors for the next year.
Colorado traded him to the Marlins in July of 1997. He became the starting second basemen for the Marlins and score the winning run of the 1997 World Series against the Indians on Edgar Renteria’s single in the eleventh inning. After a stop in LA he’d make it back to the World Series with the Diamondbacks in 2001. After being the NLCS MVP that year he hit by a pitch and loaded the bases. That allowed Luis Gonzalez to drive in the winning run in Game 7.
The rest of his career would be spent with either the Diamondbacks or the Brewers as he went back and forth between the until ultimately retiring in 2011. He worked in the front office for the Brewers before becoming their manager in 2015.
The Score on Craig Counsell – 6.5
Craig has a nice loopy signature and it came out pretty good on these cards. But he seems to have one of those autographs that doesn’t actually look like his name. I can kind of make out the “C” and the “g” in his first name though and I get the feel of it. It’s a pretty good size but that team card is busy. I really thought the other card would have been better but I think he signed a bit too close to the other player on the card.
Thanks Mr. Counsell! I’m giving this one a 6.5 overall..
