The Story of the Autograph

Cory Spangenberg is currently a second baseman with the San Diego Padres. He’s been in the major since 2014.

He grew up in Pennsylvania and helped is team to a state championship in his senior year. From there he went to college at VMI and was named the Freshman of the Year in the Big South Conference. In 2011 he transferred stating that the military commitment and coursework took too much time away from baseball.

The Padres drafted Spangenberg with the tenth overall selection in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He worked his way through the minors primarily at second base, but he also saw time and third and centerfield. He made his major league debut on September 1, 2014 and played third base. His first major league hit was a two-run single and he followed that up wit a walk-off homer in his second Major League game.

After a few years with injuries and a trip back to the minors it looks like Cory started to find is place but he’s struggling a bit so far this year with a .205 average in 44 games. 2017 was is best year after seeing time in 129 games, hitting .264, and hitting 13 homers with 46 RBI.

This return from Cory is actually two. One I sent to him at the end of last year and the other was from Spring Training this year. I like how big he signs, but I always like an autograph with a little more definition in it. Both of these cards really take a signature well. They just have perfect places to sign. Those 2016 Topps cards are always some of my favorite because of that white “mist” that helps show the signature off.

Thanks Mr. Spangenberg! I’m giving each return a 6.5.
