The Story of the Autograph

Clint Barmes is a former middle infielder in the major leagues. He played from 2003 to 2015 with the Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates, and San Diego Padres.

Barmes was born and raised in Vincennes, Indiana. He went on to play baseball at Olney Central College and Indiana State University. From there he was drafted by the Rockies in the tenth round of the 2000 MLB Draft. After a few years in the minors he made his major league debut on September 5, 2003.

He had some promising games in his first few years to build up to 2005 when on Opening Day he hit a game winning walk-off jack against Trevor Hoffman. He was chosen as NL Rookie of the Month for April. But just a couple of months later he broke his collarbone and was limited to just 81 games. It turned out he was hurt when carrying a package of deer meat given to him by Todd Helton up to his apartment. He could have had a good chance to be Rookie of the Year that season.

After 2005 his average dipped all but one year (2008). He had a break out, career season in 2009 though. That season he played in 154 games, with a .245 average and had career highs in homers (23 – almost doubling any other career high) and RBI (76). He would fill in for Troy Tulowitzki at short if needed when Tulo was hurt while in Colorado.

Barmes was traded to Houston and then moved on to Pittsburgh via free agency the following season. His stats started going a bit downhill and after three years with the Pirates he moved on to San Diego. He signed a minor league deal with the Royals in 2016 but never made it back to the majors and officially retired that year.

The Score on Clint Barmes – 5.5

Clint just has a standard scraggly signature. You can mostly make out the “B” and kind of the “C” in his first name but that’s out bit. These cards didn’t give the greatest place to sign and show off the signature though. But again, really happy to add to the Rockies list I have now.

Thanks Mr. Barmes! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
