The Story of the Autograph

Clayton Richard is a left-handed starting pitcher who is currently playing with the Toronto Blue Jays. He’s been in the league since 2008 and while he’s been with three teams (White Sox, Padres (twice), and Cubs), he’s spent the majority of his career as a Padre.

Richard was born and raised in Indiana. In his senior year he was both the state Mr. Football and Mr. Baseball as well as the class valedictorian. He went on to attend Michigan to play both football and baseball. He redshirted in football and battled Chad Henne for the starting quarterback position. He played baseball the next spring and wouldn’t return to football while with the Wolverines.

The White Sox drafted him int he eighth round of the 2005 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for the Sox on July 23, 2008. The next year he would be traded in a deal that sent Jake Peavy to Chicago. 2009 was probably the best year of his career. He pitched to a 14-9 record and a 3.75 ERA in 201.2 innings.

Richard specializes in pitching to contact and inducing groundballs. That was great while with the Padres at Petco Park. We’ll see how thing go as he moves north of the border this year with the Blue Jays.

Clayton has a pretty flat looking autograph. It almost reminds me of how Jason Grilli likes to sign his in a way. It’s a cool autograph and it came out best on the Heritage card. But the way that background is it doesn’t really help it much based on where he signed it. Glad I caught him before he left the U.S..

Thanks Mr. Richard! I’m giving this return a 6.
