The Story of the Autograph

Chuck Baker is a former infielder in Major League Baseball. He played from 1978 to 1981 with the San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins.

Baker was born in Seattle but grew up in California. He was drafted several times before signing, choosing to eventually earn an engineering degree before getting joining a team. The Twins originally drafted him in 1971, then the Royals in ’73, then the Astros in ’74. He finally signed with the Padres after they drafted him in the second round of the 1975 MLB Draft after his time at Loyola Marymount University. He made his major league debut three years later on April 7, 1978.

He played in 44 games that first season and it would be the most he would ever play in a season for his career. It would also be when he had his career high in average at .207. He appeared next for the Padres in the 1980 season but only made it into nine games. The Padres then traded him to the Minnesota Twins for Dave Edwards after the 1980 season. The 1981 season would see his last action in the bigs with his 40 games he played that year for Minnesota.

Chuck gives us another example of a great signature that has a nice size and fills up the card pretty well. I think this is also a great example of some bad luck on cards – for me. I’m not really sure Chuck has a lot of cards, these might be all he has, but all of them show him the year after he would have appeared for a team. In 1981 he was a Twin already via trade and in 1982 he didn’t appear in the big leagues. While that’s unfortunately, if it’s all he has I’m glad there’s ink on them.

Thanks Mr. Baker! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
