The Story of the Autograph

Chris Bando is a former major league catcher. He played for the Cleveland Indians for the vast majority of his career and then with the Detroit Tigers and Oakland A’s in his final seasons. His career spanned from 1981 to 1989.

Bando was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He went to college at Arizona State University who’s Sun Devils baseball teams were always strong. He hit the winning home run in the College World Series Championship Game in 1977. The Indians then selected him with a second round pick in the 1978 MLB Draft. After a few years in their minor league system he debut on August 13, 1981.

He was always a pretty typical light-hitting catcher that you would see in the 80’s. He never played much more than half a season’s games aside from 1986 and ’87 when he played in 82 and 89 games respectively. His best season statistically was probably 1984 when in 75 games he hit .291 with twelve home runs and 41 RBI. All of those were career highs.

After his playing days he’s stayed involved with baseball. He’s been a coach, a scout and a player development rep during the last 25 years since he retired from playing. Most recently he’s been managing the Texas AirHogs.

This is a great return from Chris. He has a pretty good sized signature and it especially looks good on the 1983 Topps card. I have a few versions of the 1981 Topps card signed. Some where I just have one signature like this, some where I have two. I guess I need to get my butt in gear and try to get the full card signed.

Thanks Mr. Bando! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
