The Story of the Autograph
Chili Davis is currently the hitting coach for the New York Mets after having the same position prior to this season with the Chicago Cubs.
I took a better look at some of Davis’ seasons (all 19 of them) and saw some interesting things I hadn’t thought of. The standard stuff is that he was a three-time All-Star, batted .274 for his career and had 350 homers, 1372 RBI and 142 stolen bases.
Starting with the stolen bases, I just didn’t remember that as much when I think about him. I think of him more for his DH role in the second half of his career. But while with the Giants he stole double digit bases every year with a high of 24. Later on he changed into more of a hitter and hit 20 or more homers in 9 of his last 13 years in the league (take out one of those for only playing in 35 games and it’s even better). On top of that he definitely hit for more average toward the end of his career and had a high of .318 in 1995.
I love looking back on careers like this and really seeing all the things that I just missed at the time. I think as a kid, at least in that era, I don’t know that we were focused on the number as much. There were less numbers definitely, but it was also prior to rotisserie baseball and things like that too.
The Score on Chili Davis – 5.0
To see my first return from Chili, check out my post from August 2017.
In looking back at the way I judged my first return from Chili. I’ve definitely changed the way I think about them. Usually I reserve a low score (under 5) for when there is a smudge or something like that. But on the last one I rated him low and I’m not sure why. My view on this lately is that if you put ink on my card and it looks decent you get a 5. I prefer the way he signed the first time honestly because it was on a more normal line instead of almost sideways. I hope I never promised to be consistent with my scoring…
Thanks Mr. Davis! I’m giving this return a 5.
