The Story of the Autograph

Cecil Cooper is a former first baseman and manager in Major League Baseball. He had a long career as a player from 1971 through 1987 while playing for the Red Sox and Brewers. He later managed the Astros from 2007 to 2009.

Cooper is from Texas and went to Prairie View A&M. The Red Sox drafted him in the 1968 MLB Draft and he made his first appearance for them on September 8, 1971. He was part of the Red Sox organization through the 1976 season. His first three year in the league he didn’t see too much time and then he played over 100 games in 1975 and ’76.

After the 1976 season he was traded to the Brewers for Bernie Carbo and George Scott. Milwaukee was where Cecil realized all of his potential. He was an All Star (five times), Gold Glove winner (twice), and Silver Slugger winner (three times). He received MVP votes in five consecutive years from 1979 through 1983 and finished as high as fifth three times. He also led the league in doubles twice (the majors once) and led the majors in RBI twice with over 120. He was a great hitter and from 1977 though 1983 he hit no lower than .300 and peaked at .352 in 1980.

In addition to that, Cooper won the Roberto Clemente Award in 1983 and in 2003 he was inducted into the Brewers Walk of Fame. He coached within the organization but got his chance to manage with the Astros. He started as the interim manager in 2007, had a winning season in 2008 but finished third in the central and then finally in 2009 a season under .500.

Cecil is a guy who loves to write a bunch on your card. You’ll get personalization, a message and his signature. Essentially he is writing a letter back to you. I know it’s not his signature, but he sure is filling up the card and I like that. I think the one thing I have to watch is that the old cards I’ve had him sign sometimes bleed, but these looked pretty good.

Thanks Mr. Cooper! I’m giving this a 5.5.
