The Story of the Autograph

Bernie Carbo roamed the outfields in the majors from 1969 to 1980. He never spent more than three years in any one city and overall spent time with six clubs: Reds, Cardinals (twice), Red Sox (twice), Brewers, Indians and Pirates.

Carbo made is major league debut as a September call-up in 1969. He only played in four games and made three plate appearances that year with two strikeouts. But as the Reds number one draft pick of 1965 he had promise. You better have promise if you are drafted ahead of Johnny Bench. In 1970, his rookie season, e played in 125 games (a career high) and put up career highs in batting average (.310), home runs (21), RBI (63), hits (113), and other metrics. The Sporting News selected him as their Rookie of the Year but he was officially second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting.

He was traded to the Red Sox in 1972 and he was part of the Buffalo Heads with Bill “Spaceman” Lee and Fergie Jenkins. Carbo was quirky and had a stuffed gorilla named Mighty Joe Young that would ride next to him on the plane. He famously held up a playoff game in ’75 against the Yanks to find is chaw of tobacco on the field that he lost after a great catch and put it back in is mouth. They went on to play the Reds in that Series and he hit a pinch hit tree-run homer to pave the way for Carlton Fisk’s famous game-winning home run in Game 6.

From there he jumped around. He’s admitted to using drugs during is career and Keith Hernandez said that he was the guy who introduced him to cocaine in 1980. He’s admitted to throwing away his career because of the drugs and in the 90’s he became a born again Christian.

Big marker… Big signature… This is definitely a good one. It’s a simple autograph but Bernie really fills it up. You can tell he lets the card determine how large his signature is because on the ’78 he didn’t have as large a signature so as not to cover is face. This was the second time I tried Bernie because my first attempt came back Return to Sender. I’m not sure what I did differently the second time.

Thanks Mr. Carbo!. I’m giving these a 6.5.
