The Story of the Autograph

Carl Banks had a twelve year career in the NFL as a linebacker, both inside and outside. He played for the majority of his career (nine years) in New York with the Giants where he was a Pro Bowler, All-Pro and two-time Super Bowl Champion. He also played with the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Browns.

Banks was born and raised in Michigan and went to college at Michigan State. The Giants made him the third overall pick in the 1984 NFL draft to add to a linebacking corp that was already strong with Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson. They became the nerve center of what would be dubbed the Big Blue Wrecking Crew and would be a key to winning Super Bowls XXI and XXV against the Broncos and Bills respectively. He was a Pro Bowler and an All-Pro in 1987 and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1980’s.

After playing with the Giants Banks signed with the Redskins for three years but would only play in Washington a year before they released him. He finished his career out with Cleveland when he followed Bill Belicheck there then retired after the 1995 season. These days Banks works games for the Giants on the radio and he definitely calls it like he sees it.

I like Carl’s autograph I just don’t think I had the greatest cards for him to sign. Although I will say that the pose on the 1991 Topps card is great, it just makes for a kind of busy card where his signature is. He signs with a nice clean marker though and his signature is distinctive enough that you can read it well and tell it’s his.

Thanks Mr. Banks! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
