The Story of the Autograph

Buddy Groom is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He worked as a reliever from 1992 through 2005 with the Detroit Tigers, Florida Marlins, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Groom was born and raised in Texas. He went to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and was drafted from there by the Chicago White Sox in the twelfth round of the 1987 MLB Draft. He would never make a major league appearance for the Southsiders though. Instead he was drafted by the Tigers in the 1990 minor league draft. He would then make his first appearance with them on June 20, 1992.

He first came up as a starter for the Tigers but while bouncing back and forth in the organization for the first few seasons of his career he switch to a relief role. The Tigers would eventually trade him to the Marlins and he would move around as a free agent after that.

He spent his most significant time in the majors first with the A’s from 1996 to 1999 and then with the Orioles from 2000 through 2004. It’s in these two places that he had his best overall seasons by far. Especially 2002 with the Orioles. He played in 70 games with 62 innings pitched and put up a 3-2 record with a by far career low 1.60 ERA.

He finished out his career with the Yankees and Diamondbacks, playing his last game on September 24, 2005.

The Score on Buddy Groom – 7.0

Buddy did a great job on all of these. Like the late Doug Jones he put “PTL” on all the cards which I think stands for “Praise the Lord”. These came out great though. I would love to find some cards of his in an A’s and an O’s uniform to represent his best years in the league, but these will do for now.

Thanks Mr. Groom! I’m giving this return a 7.
