The Story of the Autograph

Buddy Bell played at third base for four different team in Major League Baseball over a 18-year career. He played for Cleveland, Texas (twice), Cincinnati, and Houston. Later he also managed the Tigers, Rockies and Royals. During his career he was an All-Star, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner and is in the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame.

Bell debuted in the majors on April 15, 1972 with the Indians. He was originally drafted in 1969 and was one of their best prospects throughout his time in the minors. When he started as a rookie he mostly spent time in the outfield but would eventually move to third base. He made the All-Star team in his second year in the league. The Indians would trade Bell in 1978 to the Rangers for Toby Harrah. What’s interested is that they were both solid hitting, veteran third basemen so extremely similar players were going back-and-forth.

With the Rangers Buddy made the All-Star team another four times with his last appearance in the 1984 game. He won six Gold Glove Awards with them starting in 1979 and won them consecutively until 1984. His defensive metrics put him up there with some of the best third basemen of all time. During those great years he had with Texas he had probably the best season of this career in 1979.  He hit .299 with 18 homers and 101 RBI while playing all 162 games.

In 1985 the Rangers traded him to the Reds where he spent another couple years until they traded him in 1988 to the Astros. He went back to Texas for one last year and played sparingly.

Buddy has a great signature ad you can read it well. The second “B” looks a little off but you can still tell what’s going on. His first name looks amazing though and he used a really great marker. The angle and size are really good and I like the way the blue marker appears on this card. I’d like to see if I can get his signature on a Rangers card because that would probably look great with a blue signature. Buddy only signed one of my cards and sent the others back with this one.

Thanks Mr. Bell! I’m giving this one a 7.5.

This one I sent to the reds, but it was a while ago (2018) at this point. I sent another since then and haven’t gotten it back.
