The Story of the Autograph

Bubby Brister played quarter back in the NFL for the Steelers, Eagles, Jets, Broncos and Vikings (and with the Chiefs but never appeared for them in a game). Most people would primarily remember him as a Steeler where he got the most opportunities as a starter. Overall his career lasted 14 years.

Bubby played for both Tulane and NE Louisiana (now Louisiana-Monroe) in college and was drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 1986 NFL Draft. When you’re a QB, from Louisiana, on the Steelers… I don’t think you can get away with people trying to compare you to Terry Bradshaw. They would make fun of his accent and mis-pronounce his name as a back-up to Mark Malone in his first two years.

In 1988 he got his shot and would start almost all the games he appeared in from that year through 1992. His best year of his career was 1990 when he started 16 games and got the Steelers to a 9-7 record. He passed for 2700 yards with 20 touchdowns and 14 interceptions that year. His 20 touchdowns were actually ninth in the league that year.

After a few more years in Pittsburgh he would skip around a bit. While with the Broncos he backed up John Elway and picked up two Super Bowls rings.

If you’re wondering about the name Bubby, that isn’t his real name. Walter Andrew Brister is only nicknamed Bubby (although he was also called Bubba). Bubby comes from one of his five older sisters trying to say brother. And being the sixth of his siblings is how Bubby got his #6 jersey too.

The Score on Bubby Brister – 5.5

Bubby looks to be a pretty reliable signer. The bad think for me is that I only have Steelers cards for him. That’s not a knock on the Steelers (because that how I remember Bubby really), but any team with black in their uniforms presents a challenge for autographs. Bubby has a solid signature and he returns them with a pretty good turnaround time in general. The Pacific card is just a mess because of the cards rubbing together. I’ve noticed that a bit more lately and I might have to start treating them a bit before sending. They might just be a bit too glossy.

Thanks Mr. Brister! These get a 5.5.
