The Story of the Autograph

Brian Kingman is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1979 to 1983 with the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants.

Kingman is a native of Los Angeles, California and went on to attend Santa Monica College. He was then drafted by the California Angels in the twelfth round of the 1973 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on June 28, 1979. That first year he went 8-7 with a 4.31 ERA in 18 games with 17 starts.

The next year he did what he might be most known for… he lost 20 games. In 32 games and 30 starts he put up a 8-20 record with a 3.83 ERA. I think quite obviously that would be the league leading loss number. He never pitched another winning season and pitched in his final game in San Francisco on June 10, 1983.

The Score on Brian Kingman – 7.0

Brian appears to be a guy much like Tony La Russa who tries to find a good place to sign his cards. You can see that on the Fleer cards where he was trying to squeeze it in. I think that’s great because I like to see the signature, but it also can look a little awkward. I think my favorite of these is the 1981 Donruss card.

Thanks Mr. Kingman! I’m giving this return a 7.
