The Story of the Autograph

Brian Harper is a former catcher for the Angels, Pirates, Cardinals, Tigers, Athletics (twice), Twins, and Brewers. He spent 16 years in the majors and earned a World Series Championship with the Twins. These days he’s a hitting coach with the Toledo Mud Hens at the Triple-A level.

Harper was drafted by the Angels in the fourth round of the 1977 amateur draft and spent a couple years in their system before his first appearance on September 29, 1979. He was a great hitter in the minors but the Angels only gave him 13 at bats in the majors in 1979 and 1981 combined. They traded him to the Pirates at the end of the ’81 season. He would appear in no more than 61 games in any year with the Pirates, Cardinals, Tigers, and in his first stint with the Athletics. He just never showed what he had done in the minors and the reasons why he was drafted.

Then in 1988 Harper signed with the Minnesota Twins and spent time there until 1994. The Twins were never happy with how their catchers hit. Well, aside from his first and last years with the Twins, Harper was their man behind the plate. In his six years with the Twins he hit .306, with 48 homers and 346 RBI. He topped out at .325 in 1989 while being the teams primary catcher and playing 126 games. One of his best season would come in 1991 when the Twins won the World Series.

Brian has one of what I would consider a classic autograph that tails off with the focus on a first a initial and then a fading last name. Add the bible verse in there and it really completes it. While not a religious person, I love it when guys switch up the verses they quote because it tells me they are thinking about what they are signing. Plus Brian adds a card in their and that’s always nice.

Thanks Mr. Harper! I’m giving this one a 7.
