The Story of the Autograph

Manny Castillo played in the majors from 1980 to 1983. He played third base mostly and played with the Kansas City Royals and the Seattle Mariners.

Manny was born in the Dominican Republic and was signed by the Mets in 1973. He was drafted twice while in the minors. Once in the 1975 minor league draft by the Cardinals and then in the 1979 rule 5 draft by the Royals. He made it to the bigs with the Royals on September 1, 1980, but he only appeared in seven games with 10 at bats. He spent the next year in the minors.

The Royals traded Castillo for a player to be named later at the end of the 1981 season. That player would end up being Bud Black, who went to the Royals in March the next year. Castillo then had his best season in 1982 appearing in 138 games, hitting .247 with the only three homers of his career and 49 RBI. He appeared in 90 games the next year but was then released. He signed with the Blue Jays in the Spring of 1984 after the Mariners released him, but he never made it back to the majors.

These days he coaches in the Tampa Bay Rays farm system.

Manny has an OK signature, but there’s one thing I’m not a fan of. He signs his first name a lot smaller than his last name. It just makes it look awkward to me. But at the same time, it’s a good marker and it came out OK on the cards without any smudges or smears.

Thanks Mr. Castillo! I’m giving this a 5.
