The Story of the Autograph

Brent Mayne is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1990 to 2004 with the Kansas City Royals (twice), New York Mets, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mayne is a native of California. He went to Cal State Fullerton where he would be an All-American. The Royals Drafted him in the first round of the 1989 MLB Draft with the thirteenth pick overall. He made his major league debut a year later on September 18, 1990. He got in just five games that year but he would play half a season the next year and earn votes in the Rookie of the Year balloting.

Mayne was a pretty good defensive catcher. He definitely didn’t have a lot of power at the plate. But he could hit enough to be productive enough for a catcher in most seasons. His best season was probably 1999 in San Francisco where he hit .301 with two homers and 39 RBI in 117 games. That was a 2.2 WAR season.

So this is two returns from Brent that I got back on the same day. You can see from the stats above that one of these was out for a whole lot longer than the other and it was written off. You can also see that I didn’t note a fee. From what I’ve seen he’s noted that he has a fee and I think it’s $15 per card. Brent does have a nice signature and that blue looks great with the Royals cards.

Thanks Mr. Mayne! I’m giving this return a 7.
