The Story of the Autograph

Bobby Valentine played in the majors and later managed in the majors. His playing days were from 1971 and 1979. He actually came up in 1969 and had five games but never got an at bat. He played for the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, Mets, and Mariners. He also managed in Japan for several years in two different stints.

Valentine grew up in Stamford, CT and from there went to school at USC. He was drafted by the Dodgers in 1968 with the fifth overall pick. He played with the Ogden Dodgers to start out his time in the minors and was the Pioneer League MVP that year. He was called up in 1969 as a 19 year old and never got an at bat. He did score three runs as a pinch runner in the five games he played. He was back in the minors in 1970 and again was an MVP.

He finally made it up to the show in 1971 and played a lot of different positions to make himself useful and stay up.  But he never really showed the promise of a high draft pick and was moved from team to team. He was putting up some good numbers after being traded to the Angels until he broke his leg trying to catch a home run when his spikes caught in a chain link fence. He never really got his speed back. So he was traded to San Diego and then the Mets. He finished his playing career with the Mariners after being released by the Mets.

He managed several team in the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. These days he’s working at Sacred Heart University as an AD.

When I first got this one back I actually had to go check some other people’s successes and then check some other cards I’ve gotten back from Bobby. I would swear he signed “Bill” as his first name. But, it’s consistent with what I’ve seen from others. It’s too bad he signed his face on the 1980 card but that darn facsimile autograph strikes again. Guys never know whether to sign over or around it.

Thanks Mr. Valentine! I’m giving this return a 6.

I once got his auto at a card show…he wasn’t a guest, he just was attending the show! He said to me, “This autograph might not be worth much now, but someday, it will be worth even less!” He was quite nice about it. This was back in the 80s.

He always seemed like a guy I wouldn’t mind hanging out with.
