The Story of the Autograph
Bobby Humphrey played running back in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins over his five year career. He was selected by the Broncos in the 1989 NFL Supplemental Draft after a great career in college at Alabama.
Bobby grew up in Alabama and was a pretty good athlete. He went to school to play for the Crimson Tide and set a school rushing record (at the time) with 3,420 yards including 1,471 in 1986 (another record). He also added 523 yards receiving and 40 touchdowns. In 1986 and 87 he was chosen as an All-American. So how does a guy with this much promise end up in the supplemental draft? In 1988 spring practice he broke his foot. He was able to start his senior season but a few weeks in he would break his foot again and end his college career.
With the Broncos, Humphrey got right back to where he was in college. As a rookie he ran for 1,151 yards and seven touchdowns plus another 156 receiving yards with an additional touchdowns. Oh and let’s throw in a passing touchdown as well while we’re at it. The Broncos made it to the Super Bowl but faced the 49ers and got destroyed 55-10 and Humphrey had a key turnover in the first quarter. After that the 49ers score 34 unanswered points. You’d think that those stats would look like a Rookie of the Year campaign wouldn’t you? But then you see Barry Sanders with 1,470 yards and you can see why it’s not.
He followed up that year with another 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns and a trip to the Pro Bowl in 1990. He became the first Denver running back to rush for back-to-back seasons with 1,000 yards. With two good years in a row and something no one’s done in Denver, Bobby decided to hold out. But the Broncos don’t negotiate with hold outs. There was no deal and Bobby came back to the team in week 14, but by that time Gaston Green was the running back and he was on his way to his own 1,000 yard season and Bobby was out of shape.
Bobby was traded to the Dolphins after the season. For Miami he would rush for 471 yards and only one touchdown but also throw in 507 yards receiving and a touchdown. In 1992 he made it back to the AFC Championship game making it two years in a row, but it resulted in another loss (again to the Bills).
Later on he would coach the Birmingham Steeldogs in the Arena Football League.
The Score on Bobby Humphrey – 5.0
Bobby has a solid autograph and he uses the space pretty well. I think the only card that doesn’t work is well is that 1990 Topps “1000 Yard Club” card because it’s a little two dark where he signed (not that he should have signed someplace else or anything). I don’t know if it’s the picture or what, but this might be the darkest marker I have ever seen.
Thanks Mr. Humphrey. I’m giving this return a 5.
