The Story of the Autograph

Bobby Crosby is a former shortstop in the major leagues. He played from 2003 to 2009 with the Oakland Athletics, and then in the 2010 season played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Crosby is a native of California. He was first drafted by the Angels while he was in high school. The Angels chose him with their 34th round pick in 1998 but he chose not to sign. Instead he chose to play college baseball at Cal State Long Beach. Then in 2001 the Athletics chose him in the first round of the draft with the 25th overall pick.

He made his major league debut in 2003 on September 2nd, but only played in eleven games and was still a rookie. In 2004 he earned a spot of the big club after the A’s lost Miguel Tejada, their former MVP. Crosby put up a .239 average with 22 home runs, and 64 RBI. He led rookies in hits, double and walks and went on to earn the 2004 Rookie of the Year award. That was the sixth time an Athletic won the award.

That was unfortunately one of the best seasons of his career. He played in 151 games that year and only ever played more than 97 games once more in his career, in 2008 when he played in 145. He would hit .238 with 61 home runs and 263 RBI during his time in Oakland.

He moved on to the Pirates as a free agent for his final season in 2010. The Pirates traded him along with DJ Carrasco and Ryan Church to the Diamondbacks for Chris Snyder and Pedro Ciriaco. He would appear in only nine games before being released before the end of August. HE would try to make it back to the majors with the Brewers in later years but his never made it back.

These days he’s been coaching in the minor leagues.

It’s always nice to get a former Rookie of the Year to put some ink on cards so I’m very happy Bobby was accommodating. I really love those Bowman Heritage cards signed. They don’t always come out great because of the way the pictures are on the card, but this one is probably the best of this bunch as there was a great place to sign.

Thanks Mr. Crosby! I’m giving this return a 6.
