The Story of the Autograph

Bob Patterson is a former left-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1985 to 1998 with the Padres, Pirates, Rangers, Angels, and Cubs.

Patterson was born in Florida and raised in South Carolina. He went to college at East Carolina University and was drafted by the Padres in the 21st round of the 1982 MLB Draft. After a few years in the minors he made his MLB debut on September 2, 1985. He finished out that season with the Padres and was traded prior to the next season to the Pirates in exchange for Marvell Wynne.

He spent more time with the Pirates than any other organization (six seasons). He had only a few appearance a year until 1990 and then he had one of the best seasons of his career. He went 8-5 in 55 appearances with five starts and a 2.95 ERA. He was part of those great Pirates playoff teams from 1990-1992.

He moved on to the other teams he played for via free agency. He had some great success with California and Chicago where he put up at least 1.1 WAR from 1995 to 1997. While that doesn’t sound great, I think it’s hard for a pitcher to get WAR if they aren’t a starter or a closer. He finished his career in 1998 with the Cubs.

The Score on Bob Patterson – 6.5

Bob has a lot going on with his signature. The inscription of the Bible version just adds to how much is going on. It comes out better on the landscape card v. the portrait cards. I think for me the best of the bunch of these is the 1993 Upper Deck. But I did notice that two of the three cards I had him sign were for the seasons after he played with the teams he’s pictured with.

Thanks Mr. Patterson! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
