The Story of the Autograph

Bob James is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played during eight seasons from 1978 to 1987 with the Montreal Expos (twice), Detroit Tigers, and Chicago White Sox.

James is a native of California. He was a first round pick out of high school for the Montreal Expos when they took him with the ninth overall pick of the 1976 MLB Draft. They converted him from a catcher to a pitcher. He made his major league debut for them on September 7, 1978 when he was just twenty years old. He played in three seasons in that first stint in Montreal and then was traded to the Tigers.

He then only played in two seasons with the Tigers before being traded back to the Expos in the 1983 season. The next season he started his first significant amount of games with 62 appearances. The Expos put him in position to save games and he got 10 of them that season and went 6-6 with a 3.66 ERA.

James was then moved to the White Sox in exchange for Vance Law in December of 1984. He went on to save a career high 32 games with an 8-7 record and 2.13 ERA for the Southsiders in what was definitely his career year. He had a 4.3 WAR that year which was by far his best. He would finish out his career after being released by the White Sox in 1987.

The Score on Bob James – 6.5

Bob looks like he puts down his first initial and then his last name. These came out OK but there are definitely places where you can see the marker might have been failing a bit. I think the best performance by the marker is on the 1984 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. James! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
