The Story of the Autograph

Bill Madlock is a former third baseman in the major leagues. He played from 1973 to 1987 for the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers.

Madlock was born in Memphis, Tennessee and then grew up in Illinois. In high school he played basketball and football in addition to baseball. While he had hundreds of scholarships for the other sports he only had two for baseball and he took one to Southeastern Community College so he could play a less dangerous game. He was first drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1969 MLB Draft but didn’t sign. He signed a year later with the Washington Senators after being drafted in the fifth round.

By the time he made his major league debut on September 7, 1973, the Senators had moved to Texas. He ended up appearing in 21 games in that first season. After the season he was traded with Vic Harris to Chicago for Ferguson Jenkins. He blossomed in Chicago, becoming an All-Star in his second season and earning MVP votes. He also won his fist batting titles in 1975 and 1976. Before the 1977 season he was involved in the second trade in his career sending he and Rob Sperring to the Giants for Bobby Murcer, Steve Ontiveros and a minor leaguer.

He kept up his hitting in San Francisco and then was traded to the Pirates in the 1979 season. Pittsburgh was on their run to winning the World Series that year and Madlock was a good part of it. He hit .375 in the series with nine hits and three RBI. He would win two more batting titles and two more All-Star appearances while in Pittsburgh in 1981 and 1983. Then Pittsburgh would trade him in the 1985 season to the Dodgers and they would get back RJ Reynolds, Cecil Espy and Sid Bream. He was released by the Dodgers in May of 1987 and he would finish with the Tigers that season.

Madlock was known as “Mad Dog” for his temper.

I misjudged how much Bill charged for his autograph. It looks like he does $10 per card. These came out pretty good and it looks like he tries to find a good spot to sign your card too. I’m glad I got him as a Pirate. I need to try to find a Cubs and a Giants card of his though too.

Thanks Mr. Madlock! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
