The Story of the Autograph

Bill Bates is a former NFL safety. He played from 1983 to 1997, all with the Dallas Cowboys. He was later a coached with the Jaguars in 2003 and a high school coach from 2005-2007 and 2009-2012.

Bates is a native of Tennessee. He played football and basketball in high school. He was all-state in football and considered a top five recruit in the state. He helped his team reach the state semi-finals in 1978. He then went on and played at the University of Tennessee. He was a four year starter there and even then known as a hard hitter.

He went undrafted in 1983 and then was selected by the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. But instead of going to the Generals he decided to sign as an undrafted free agent with the Cowboys, his favorite team growing up. While a long shot, he made the squad and started making his mark on special teams. He made the All-Rookie team and was the Special Teams Player of the Year in the NFL.

He was in Dallas long enough to experience some lows and some very highs. That included being part of three Super Bowl winning teams. He was on injured reserve for the 1992 season due to a knee injury and missed the first of that run the Cowboys had.

The Score on Bill Bates – 6.0

I’m definitely not a Cowboy fan, but even I remember Bill Bates from back in the day. I know he was a favorite with the Cowboys fans, but he played so hard you really couldn’t not notice him on the broadcasts. And he made a name for himself by doing that. I think of these cards I like the Action Packed the best. It’s a quirky card and it’s also an “All-Madden” card which seems to match the way he played.

Thanks Mr. Bates! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
